Description Daimler-Benz Mercedes W1658 cyl., 1492 ccm, twin supercharged, aprx. 254 bhp. This very special 'Silver Arrow' has been developed in 1939 within the short time of only 8 months, just to compete in one single race, the Tripoli Grand Prix. Back then Libya was a colony of Italy and the Italians were tired of Germany's domination in Grand Prix racing. So they turned the Tripoli Grand Prix which from 1933 to 1938 had been held as a Formula Libre event (e.g. no weight or engine restrictions) into a "Voiturette" race for smaller 1500 ccm cars. The car's V8 engine of 1492 ccm, twin supercharged and running on alcohol fuel delivered aprx. 254 bhp. The result was a double victory of Hermann Lang leading his team mate Rudolf Caracciola, followed by Emilio Villoresi (Alfa Romeo) and Piero Taruffi (Maserati). Since then the W165 never raced again.
